Dublin man on robbery charge is freed

A Dublin man charged in connection with the attempted robbery of a cash transit van in Co Kildare last November was freed from custody yesterday after a High Court judge ruled his rearrest by gardaí last Friday, and therefore his subsequent detention, was unlawful.

However, Eamonn Dunne (31), of Dunsoughly Drive, Ratoath Road, Finglas, who had been in custody on remand in Cloverhill prison since November 5th, must attend a District Court hearing this week to answer the charge against him.

He is charged with conspiring with five others to steal more than €900,000 cash at Tesco, Shackleton Road, Celbridge, on November 2nd, 2007.

Court adjourns libel case application

The High Court has adjourned an application by TV3 for discovery of documents in a libel action brought against it by Wayne O'Donoghue, who is due to be released from prison today having served a sentence for the manslaughter of schoolboy Robert Holohan (11).

O'Donoghue (23) is due to be freed from Midlands prison after serving three years of a four-year sentence for killing the boy on January 4th, 2005, at Ballyedmond, Midleton, Co Cork.

As a result of some of the media coverage of the sentencing hearing, O'Donoghue issued proceedings for libel against a number of outlets, including TV3.

Committee told of bus 'millionaires'

Private bus operators are becoming "multi-millionaires" through the sale of bus licences obtained from the Department of Transport, an Oireachtas transport committee has heard.

Unions at Dublin Bus yesterday appeared before the joint transport committee to discuss the improvement of bus services throughout the State, but particularly in Dublin.

Acting general secretary of the National Bus and Rail Union Michael Faherty told the committee that there was no solid evidence that subcontracting or part-privatising Dublin Bus would improve the service.

Injured fisherman taken off trawler

A fisherman injured while working on board a French trawler off the west coast was rushed to hospital after a night rescue.

The Naval Service and Coast Guard overcame appalling weather about 50 nautical miles off the west coast to rescue the deck hand.

The fisherman, who was working on board the French trawler Simone Keghian II, sustained a serious injury to his eye on Monday night.
