Washington not impressed by Iran pact

VIENNA -A nuclear co- operation pact Iran struck with the International Atomic Energy Agency has "real limitations" and Tehran should stop trying to manipulate the agency to dodge harsher UN sanctions, according to a senior US envoy.

Washington was not impressed by Iran's transparency promise - hailed as a "milestone" by the IAEA on Tuesday - to allay suspicions it is secretly seeking atomic bombs.

Washington would pursue talks with five other big powers on more UN sanctions against Tehran, the US ambassador to the UN nuclear watchdog said.

Burma arrests leading dissidents

RANGOON -Burma's (also called Myanmar) military rulers arrested 13 leading dissidents yesterday in a series of midnight raids in Rangoon (Yangon) designed to quash protests against a hefty rise of fuel prices and falling living standards.

The junta also deployed armed police on the streets of the former capital, as well as truckloads of men from its feared Union Solidarity and Development Association network. - (Reuters)

Boy (11) shot in pub car park

LIVERPOOL -An 11-year- old boy has died after being shot in a pub car park in Liverpool last night.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said the boy was shot at about 7.30pm in the car park of the Fir Tree pub in Croxteth. No one has yet been arrested. - (PA)

Curfew ordered in Bangladesh

DHAKA -Bangladesh's army-backed interim government has ordered an indefinite curfew in the capital Dhaka and five other cities after the presence of soldiers at a campus football match sparked violent protests. The protests started at the Dhaka University on Monday and have since spread to other institutions. - (Reuters)

Georgia accuses Russia on air space

TBILISI -Georgia has accused Russian military jets of violating its airspace for a second time this month, but Russia says its aircraft had been nowhere near Georgian frontiers. - (Reuters)

Man rescued from rubbish truck

VIENNA -Austrian refuse collectors rescued a Polish man from the jaws of a rubbish truck after hearing his cries for help, Austrian daily Kleine Zeitung reported yesterday.

The homeless 50-year-old had spent the night in a rubbish container on a housing estate in south Austria. In the morning, refuse collectors emptied the bin into the back of their lorry. One of the workers heard his cries and stopped the pressing machine.

The man was not hurt but taken to hospital for checks. - (Reuters)
