A bomb attack on a pub run by the president of Sligo Chamber of Commerce could have been life-threatening, gardaí said yesterday.

A brick and incendiary pipe bomb were thrown through a window of Caheny's bar on the town's Mail Coach Road early yesterday.

Owner Ann Clinton, who is the chamber president, was asleep in her private quarters upstairs. She was awakened by a small explosion shortly before 4am.

There were two other people in the house at the time, but nobody was hurt. There was minor damage to the pub.

Gardaí said they were treating the incident very seriously.

One investigating officer said: "It's lucky nobody was injured. The explosion was potentially life-threatening."

Detectives appealed for help from any witnesses who may have been in the area at the time.

There was a similar attack on the home of another prominent business person in the town some weeks ago. However, gardaí said they were not linking the two incidents.

They are investigating whether the attack is linked to members of two feuding families who occasionally drink in the bar.
