Indonesian President Mr Abdurrahman Wahid said today he expected to be impeached by legislators over two financial scandals, adding he would campaign again for the presidency at the next election due in 2004.

Mr Wahid also said he would not quit in the face of growing demands to step down as Indonesia's first democratically-elected leader, setting the stage for a bruising showdown over the Muslim cleric's political future.
“I will campaign until the end of the next election (in 2004). This is a declaration from a citizen who will be impeached,” Mr Wahid said at a seminar in the presidential palace, the first time he has said he expected to lose his job.
Leading politicians have said Mr Wahid was heading towards an impeachment hearing, expected by August, over the two scandals following two censures by parliament.
