Efforts are continuing at the Irish Embassy in Nigeria and with the Nigerian authorities to seek information about an Irish oil worker who was kidnapped on Sunday only 24 hours after he arrived in the country.

Bryan Fogerty (39), from Oughterard, Co Galway, was kidnapped from a bar with three other men in the southern city of Port Harcourt, where he was working for US oil services company Halliburton.

Mr Fogerty, two British men and a Pole were taken by armed men who wore army uniforms. The abductors escaped in a speedboat after security forces were reported to have engaged them in a gun battle.

Yesterday a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said: "The Irish Embassy is continuing to liaise with the family and the Nigerian authorities, but there is nothing more at the moment."

Mr Fogerty had been employed by Halliburton for 12 years until he returned to college and completed a masters degree in biochemistry at NUI Galway four years ago.

Nigerian police named one of those seized as Briton John Guyan and said he worked for Smith International Inc, a supplier to the oil and gas industry.

Yesterday two Norwegian and two Ukrainian oil workers kidnapped from a ship off Nigeria were released after a week in captivity. They were said to be well.
