A prisoner was found hanged in his cell in Limerick prison early yesterday morning

A prisoner was found hanged in his cell in Limerick prison early yesterday morning. He was named as Thomas Halligan (25), from Waterford, who was serving 10 years for grievous bodily harm.

Halligan was found hanging from the cell window with a sheet around his neck shortly before 4 a.m. during a routine check.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor. A post mortem will be held.

Gardai and the prison authorities are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances of the death.

Mr Alan Kavanagh, chairman of the Limerick branch of the Prison Officers' Association, said yesterday that the death was a tragic incident. Everything possible had been done to try to revive the prisoner.
