TWO INVESTIGATIONS are under way after a recently retired garda detective died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Garda station. The incident occurred just before 10am on Saturday at Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station in Co Leitrim.

The dead man was a 55 year old who had retired from the Garda two months ago. He had been a member of the force for 35 years, serving in Carrick-on-Shannon for 29 years.

The deceased called to the station on Saturday morning and told former colleagues he wanted to spend some time working on cases that had continued after his retirement.

It is believed the man gained access to a weapons safe and took an Uzi submachine gun, fatally wounding himself.

A married father of four adult children, the deceased was originally from Donegal but had lived in Carrick-on-Shannon since the 1980s. A Garda investigation into the shooting has begun and a separate inquiry by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is also under way.
