The 42-year-old driver died following a workplace accident at Goods Mills, Waterlands Shipping Warehousing, Kinsale, Co Cork.

John Rice, from Aherla, Co Cork, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before lunchtime.

The man’s remains were taken to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem was due to be carried out.

Gardaí and Health and Safety Authority inspectors are investigating the incident, which happened at about 12.45pm.

A spokesman for Waterlands Shipping Warehousing, Roger Dale, said staff at the facility were devastated by the death. He extended thoughts and prayers to Mr Rice’s family.

“It is with deep regret that we confirm a fatal accident has occurred at Waterlands Shipping Warehousing, Kinsale.

“We are all profoundly devastated and shocked by what has happened, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time,” Mr Dale said.

He said the company was co-operating fully with separate Garda and Health and Safety Authority investigations into the incident.

Inspectors from the authority said they were made aware of the incident shortly after lunchtime.

Health and Safety Authority spokesman Gavin Lonergan said: “We were made aware of the incident. There was a fatality at around lunchtime and we are investigating it.”
