A senior police officer has been appointed to oversee an investigation into a shooting incident which left a man injured early yesterday. Mr Wayne Hindes (21) was shot in the leg after RUC officers raided a house in Belfast's Lecale Street around 3 a.m.

An RUC spokesman said that when officers entered the house, three men, at least one armed with a handgun, fled through the back door. He added that police fired a number of shots, and in a follow-up search, a man with a gunshot wound to his leg was arrested at a house in Rockview Street.

The injured man's father, Mr Robert Hindes, accused police of over-reacting. He said his son and his friends were stripping electrical cables for copper in the unoccupied house, and were unarmed.
