Protests were lodged today after claims that at least two polling stations in Northern Ireland stayed open beyond last night's deadline.

Chief electoral officer Mr Denis Stanley was investigating reports that people were allowed to vote in Strabane, Co Tyrone and Garrison, Co Fermanagh after 10 p.m.

With an expected overall turnout of well over 70 per cent, queues had developed outside several polling stations.

Ulster Unionist Party members in Fermanagh/South Tyrone, said they had protested to the chief electoral officer after claims the polling station in Garrison, a nationalist area, re-opened at 10.15 p.m. and did not close until just before ll p.m.
