The new property registration authority that will manage and control the registry of deeds and land was formally launched yesterday by Minister for Justice Michael McDowell.

The authority is being established under the Registration of Deeds and Title Act 2006 and will be chaired by the chief executive of Kingspan Century, Gerry McCaughey.

Announcing the names of the 10-member authority yesterday, Mr McDowell said it would play a "dynamic and forceful role" in promoting registration of ownership of land with a view to facilitating the introduction of electronic conveyancing.

The chairman Mr McCaughey will be aided by Una Woods of University of Limerick, John Shaw, a practising solicitor nominated by the Law Society, Emer Daly of Axa Ireland and Maura Whelan, a practising barrister nominated by the Bar Council.

Shots fired at Limerick house

Gardaí in Limerick have appealed for information following an incident in which a gunman fired shots at a house in the city early yesterday morning.

It is understood that two shots were fired at the house on Claughaun Road in Garryowen shortly after 5am. A downstairs window was damaged in the incident but a woman who was asleep in the house at the time escaped injury.

The attack happened close to the area where two brothers aged eight and 12 were targeted by a gunman last week.

Gardaí appealed for any witnesses to contact gardaí at Henry Street Garda station on 061-212400.

A third of farmers' appeals successful

Just over one-third of the 790 appeals lodged by farmers unhappy with decisions of the Department of Agriculture in relation to the Single Farm Payment were successful.

The Agriculture Appeals Office, set up as part of the implementation of the Single Farm Payment in 2005, issued its first report yesterday evening.

It said that 36 per cent of the appeals were successful or partially successful and the Department of Agriculture had received over 300,000 scheme applications for Single Farm Payments.

Trust laws will offer 'flexibility'

Proposed new legislation governing trusts will provide for greater flexibility and variation, Minister for Justice Michael McDowell said yesterday.

The proposed new legislation, which has been approved by the Government, will take account of recommendations of the Law Reform Commission and permit the variation of a trust in certain circumstances for the benefit of the trust's beneficiaries.

Man held over alleged robbery

A 37-year-old Galway city man has been remanded in custody following his arrest in connection with the alleged robbery of a Securicor van at Galway Shopping Centre in July .

Anthony Burke, Glendara, Rahoon, Galway, is charged with robbing a Securicor employee of €4,071 cash and a smoke box S200 series, valued at €2,500, on July 21st last at Galway Shopping Centre, contrary to Section 14 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
