Head injury killed baby, inquest told

A five-week-old baby boy died after sustaining a head injury, an inquest heard yesterday. Ekam Singh, Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, died on March 30th, 2005, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

The baby's body was identified to gardaí on March 31th at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, by nurse Margaret Byrne. A postmortem by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis found he died from a head injury.

The opinions of five other consultants were sought as part of the postmortem.

Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the inquest at the request of Insp Tom Lundon of Dún Laoghaire Garda station to facilitate Garda investigations. The parents are now residing in India.

Extradition of sex offender sought

The British authorities are seeking the extradition of an English man over his alleged failure to register as a sex offender following his conviction for indecently assaulting a young girl just over three years ago.

Daniel Hunt is serving a sentence in Cork prison on an unrelated matter and is due for release within days, the High Court heard yesterday.

Hunt, in his 20s, with an address at Stourbridge, Worcestershire, is wanted in Britain where it is claimed he is in breach of the Sex Offenders Act 2003.

In June 2004 he was convicted at Nottingham Magistrates Court of the indecent assault of a female under 16 years, Mr Justice Michael Peart was told.

He was sentenced to undergo an 18-month community rehabilitation programme and ordered to register as a sex offender. However, he failed to comply with the terms of that order, it is claimed.

The matter will come before the High Court again next week.

Assault victim in intensive care

A man who was critically injured during an alleged assault in Cork city on Wednesday night is in intensive care in hospital. The 56-year-old was found unconscious at Farren Street at about 10pm with serious head injuries.

A male in his 20s was being detained at Watercourse Road Garda station yesterday.

Teenager released into HSE care

A Vietnamese teenager, who spent a week in custody following his arrest for not having a passport, has been released into the care of the Health Service Executive.

The 17-year-old boy, an unaccompanied minor, was arrested at Store Street, Dublin, on June 7th and charged with not having a passport or equivalent documents establishing his identity, contrary to the Immigration Act.

Pub chain fights prosecution

A major pub chain is fighting a prosecution for not removing a smoking area/ beer garden from one of its Dublin premises, a court heard yesterday.

Capital Bars Ltd, its directors, brothers Liam and Desmond O'Dwyer, and Adrian Shanagher, deny the structure at Zanzibar, Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin, is unauthorised.

The city council is prosecuting the company and the directors for failure to obey an enforcement notice requiring its removal. The structure has been in place for seven years and an application to retain it had been submitted this week.

The case was adjourned for hearing on July 19th.
