Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a pedestrian on the main N7, Nenagh to Limerick, road yesterday.
A man was struck by an articulated lorry at about 1.30pm near the Yellow Bridge pub. Emergency services arrived within minutes but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí have not released the man's name until relatives have been informed.
Trial of former FF TD to resume
The trial of a former Fianna Fáil TD charged with obtaining a tax clearance certificate by false pretences will resume today after a day of legal argument.
Michael Collins (66), Patrickswell, Co Limerick, is accused of claiming he was tax compliant at a time when he held a bogus non-resident account at a Co Limerick bank.
The former Limerick West TD has pleaded not guilty at Limerick Circuit Court to obtaining a tax clearance certificate by false pretences in 2002.
Judge nominated to Circuit Court
The Government has nominated Raymond Fullam SC for appointment as a judge of the Circuit Court. Mr Fullam was born in 1947 and graduated from UCD in Commerce and Arts. He was called to the Bar in 1977 and the Inner Bar in 1995. Between 1977 and 1995 he was a practising barrister on the eastern and Dublin circuits and from 1983 to 1991 represented the State as prosecutor for Co Kildare.
Mr Fullam lectured in revenue law at King's Inns from 1983 to 1990 and since 2002 has been a member of the GAA Drugs Appeal Board.
Manslaughter charged gets bail
A Wexford man has appeared in court charged with manslaughter last April. Patrick McCormack (28), Glenbrien, Co Wexford, was charged at Enniscorthy District Court yesterday with the unlawful killing of Aidan Gahan (56). He was further charged with committing serious assault.
Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla remanded him on bail to Enniscorthy District Court on November 14th.
Fatal airport plunge was accident
Gardaí have confirmed that the fatal plunge of a man at Dublin airport on Tuesday was an accident. The man, who was in his 50s, fell two storeys from an escalator at Dublin airport.
He was brought to Beaumont Hospital, where he later died.
Cannabis worth €1.5m seized
Gardaí have seized €1.5 million worth of cannabis after searching a car and an apartment in Dublin yesterday.
Forty kilos of cannabis were discovered in a car which was stopped in Chapelizod at 7.30am and a 25-year-old man was arrested.
Dublin Bay plan to be displayed
A total of 55,000 new residents could be accommodated around Dublin Bay if the port was relocated, according to a report by Dublin City Council. The creation of a new Bull Island south of the bay with new beaches, parks and waterfront facilities could be envisaged under proposals which are going on public display from Monday. A report was presented to city councillors yesterday.
File for DPP on Dundalk assault
A file has been given to the DPP in relation to an assault on a Dundalk man that left him requiring more than 300 stitches, the local district court heard yesterday.
Ciarán McPhillips (26), Rathmore Cottages, Hackballscross, Dundalk, is alleged to have assaulted Kevin McDonagh (19), causing him harm at Ashling Park, Dundalk on August 12th last.
