Gardaí are investigating a house fire in Hacketstown, Co Carlow, which claimed the life of a woman (50).
The woman was pulled from the house by her son early yesterday after he returned home at about 4.30am to find the house on fire. She was later pronounced dead.
Fine Gael TD Pat Deering, who serves the area, said it was a tragedy which had left the local community reeling. “We can’t begin to imagine what her son must be going through,” he said.
“For something like this to happen the day before Christmas Eve is just terribly, terribly sad.”
