Divisional officer Mr Chris Kerr said the site has suffered severe damage.

"The fire was spreading rapidly and we had to ask for assistance from all over Belfast," he said.

"Good work by the crews stopped the fire spreading to an adjacent chemical factory."

Asked whether the fire may have been caused by arsonists, Mr Kerr he replied: "We are certainly considering that."

The outbreak at the bakery is the third major blaze in the North in the past 24 hours.

A disused building at Wellington College in south Belfast was partially gutted yesterday, while a clothing factory in a Co Antrim industrial estate suffered £300,000 worth of damage in another fire.
