As the remains of a 23year-old Traveller were laid to rest in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, yesterday, an investigation was under way at a British prison into the circumstances of his death.

Martin Ward, originally from Charlestown, Co Mayo, was found dead in his cell at Woodhill Prison, Milton Keynes on Monday of last week. He had just been sentenced to four years for aggravated burglary.

An inquest in Milton Keynes was told last Friday that Ward had been seen by a prison healthcare officer after he complained of chest pains. Checks were made on the prisoner throughout the night and the next morning staff found Mr Ward in bed with blood on his pillow.
