Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a fatal road crash in which a 66-year-old woman was killed.

Sheila Shanahan, from Elm Vale in Wilton in Cork city was fatally injured in the three vehicle collison which happened in Schull at around 4pm on Saturday.

The woman’s car collided with a mini-bus travelling in the opposite direction and then with a car travelling in the same direction near Schull garda station.

The woman, whose family have a holiday home in the Schull area, was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.

The female driver of the mini-bus was also removed to Cork University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no passengers on the mini-bus at the time.

The driver of the other car, also a woman, was uninjured but was treated for shock by paramedics who attended the scene of the crash.

Gardaí closed the road for a period and diversions were put in place to allow a garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information to contact Bantry Garda Station on 027-20860.

The death brings to 14 the number of people to lose their lives on Cork roads so far this year and brings the national total for road traffic deaths to 130.
