October weather was hotter and wetter than average, says Met Éireann

Temperatures during October in n Ireland were up to 2.5 degrees centigrade higher than average, according to the latest Met Éireann monthly weather report.

Above average sunshine and strong gales were also recorded last month. The end of the first week of October saw the remnants of ex-hurricane Sam stall over the western half of the country, and there was very heavy rainfall as a result, especially on the 8th and 9th.

Rainfall was above average in most parts of Ireland for the time of year.

The highest total rainfall was recorded at Newport in Co Mayo, where 265.7mm of rainfall was recorded during the month of October, making it its wettest October since 2011.

Valentia Observatory in Co Kerry and a weather station in Belmullet, Co Mayo, recorded their wettest October since 2000.

Strong winds and gales were recorded at the end of the month, especially on Halloween night.

A gust of 100km/h was reported at Mace Head in Galway on Sunday, October 31st, which was the month’s highest wind speed.

Temperatures were above average across Ireland during October.

The Phoenix Park weather station in Dublin was the driest station last month, with just 75.2mm of rain recorded. It also recorded its highest temperature for October since 2011, and the highest temperature for the month of October overall.

On Thursday, October 7th, temperatures hit 20 degrees at this station, just over six degrees above its long-term average.

The stations at Dublin Airport, Ballyhaise in Co Cavan, and Mullingar in Co Westmeath had their warmest October since 2001.

All of the sunshine totals were above their long-term average and the south and east experienced the most rays.

Dublin saw the most sun, with the airport weather station recording 111.9 hours of sun in total. This means that this Dublin station got an average of 3.61 hours of sunshine per day.

Meanwhile, Co Donegal saw the least sun, with the Malin Head station recording just 75.4 hours of sunshine in October.

Co Wexford in the sunny southeast recorded the most sunshine in one day. Johnstown Castle recorded 10 hours of sun on Sunday, October 10th.
