Emergency services in Galway had to assist a number of people stranded in freeing temperatures in cabs on a big wheel in Eyre Square when it stalled at the city's Christmas market on Friday night.

The incident occurred shortly after the Christmas market lights were switched on, when the big wheel with 24 cabs in total stopped revolving.

Initial reports said there were at least 20 people stranded in the higher cabs at the time.

Galway Fire Brigade used cherrypickers to provide blankets to occupants of the cabs during the rescue effort.

Staff ratcheted the wheel to take people out of the cabs at ground level over a period of two-and-a half hours, and all those rescued were offered paramedic assistance.

Several were said to be showing signs of hypothermia but there were no injuries reported.

Former mayor Cllr Pádraig Conneely said the big wheel should be closed until it was independently checked for health and safety.

“There were several very young kids up there, and serious questions need to be answered, “he said.
