Rescue services in Co Donegal have stood down a search operation for a child which began after a woman’s body was found in waters close to Malin in Co Donegal.

A passer-by found the woman’s body at Roxtown Harbour just before 6.30pm and a member of the public said they had seen the woman earlier with a baby, prompting the search.

However, the shore and sea search for a child has been called off after the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed the child was not missing.

Her car was found close by on the shoreline at Rockstown Harbour near Dunaffe.

It is believed she had walked out to a causeway at low tide and was then cut off when the high tide came in. She has become the 12th person to drown during the recent hot weather.

She is understood to be from Derry. Her mobile phone was recovered at the scene.

A spokesman for Malin Head Coastguard said last night’s tide was one of the biggest of the year so far.

“It was a huge tide which peaked at 8pm and went out quickly. We got a call from the gardaí that a woman’s body had been located at Roxtown Harbour.
