Hooker unveiled at gala ball in Galway sails in honour of Swiss teen murdered in 2007

Swiss student Manuela Riedo (17), arrived in Galway to learn English just three days before she was murdered.

A traditional hooker named for murdered Swiss teenager Manuela Riedo has sailed into Galway Bay to honour her memory.

The traditional vessel had been renamed Manuela in memory of the 17-year-old, who was murdered in Galway in 2007.

The student had arrived in Galway to learn English just three days beforehand.

The hooker was unveiled at a gala ball in Galway city hosted by the Manuela Riedo Foundation, which was created to raise funds for awareness of and prevention of sexual crime.

Members of Badóirí an Chladaigh Community Boat Club, who had worked on the restoration of the craft, were joined by Mayor of Galway Cllr Frank Fahy in the symbolic voyage into the bay before returning to the Claddagh in Galway.
