Tributes paid to former Tipperary TD Dr Seán McCarthy

Former minister of state and Fianna Fáil Tipperary TD, Dr Seán McCarthy, who represented Tipperary South in the Dáil between 1981 and 1989, has died, aged 84.

Before entering politics, Dr McCarthy was a GP in Cashel for many years. In 1987-1989 he was minister of state at the department of industry and commerce.

He lost his seat in the 1989 general election and was subsequently elected to the Seanad by the agricultural panel, where he remained until 1992. He later sat on Tipperary County Council for many years.

He is survived by his children Eoin, Caitríona, John, Aidan and Maria.

His wife, Mary Jo, died in 2018.

Paying tribute, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of his passing, saying he had represented the Tipperary South constituency with “great distinction” for many years.

He extended sympathies to Dr McCarthy’s family and friends.
