American sailor Lloyd Thornburg has travelled to Dublin to accept the trophy for the new record for the fastest sail speed around Ireland.

Last Friday, Thornburg's MOD70 Trimaran, Phaedo 3, beat the previous record by one hour and 45 minutes.

The National Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire, the official custodians for the world record, hosted a dinner at the weekend for Thornburg and the crew to present the trophy and celebrate their win.

The whole crew of Phaedo 3 were at the dinner, including Irish sailor Damien Foxall. Foxall, originally from Co Kerry, lives in Canada and frequently joins trimarans from all over the world to compete in races.

Thornburg said he was delighted to be honoured at the home club of Annalise Murphy, who is currently representing Ireland in the Olympics. He said it was particularly significant to have Foxall aboard. “He is such an asset to the team.”

This is the third time the record for the fastest sail speed around Ireland has been broken in the past year.

Before this, the record had not been broken in 22 years, when Steve Fossett set the long-standing record of 44 hours with Lakota in 1993. Phaedo 3's new record stands at 36 hours and 52 minutes.
