A 78-year-old woman was killed and her sister (75) injured in a two-vehicle collision near their home in north Cork yesterday morning.

The woman, named locally as Mary Barry from Inchimea, Lyre near Banteer, was travelling on the main R579 Cork-Kanturk Road when the collision occurred.

Ms Barry was driving towards Kanturk when her car was in collision with a small truck heading in the opposite direction at Glen South at about 11.30am.

HSE paramedics attended to Ms Barry but she was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.

Ms Barry’s sister, who was a front-seat passenger, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while the driver of the truck was treated for shock.

The road was closed and a Garda forensic crash investigator examined the scene.
