Equestrian: Ireland is lying fourth of the 18 nations competing in the European show jumping championships following last night's opening competition held under floodlights at Windsor.

Seventy-seven riders competed in the speed class won by Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer on Ulysse ahead of his compatriot Steve Guerdat riding Jasica Solier.

Ireland’s Darragh Kerins and Night Train finished eighth, Cameron Hanley and SIEC Livello were 15th, Cian O’Connor and Rancorrado placed 23rd with Thomas Ryan and Urleven van de Helle in 53rd spot.

The Irish team score is 5.86 penalties while Switzerland holds the lead on 3.66. The Netherlands, who yesterday won the team dressage gold, are second on 3.96 and the French third on 4.71. The show jumpers now have a day’s rest before tomorrow’s two-round Nations’ Cup when the team medals will be decided.
