'Irish Times' sportswriter wins ESB award

Mr Keith Duggan, sportswriter with The Irish Times,has won the Sports Journalist of the Year award at the ESB National Media Awards.

Mr Duggan earned the award for feature articles on "travelling the lonely comeback trail with former Ryder Cup golfer Philip Walton" and for his reporting on "a year of highs and lows for [former] Fermanagh GAA boss Dominic Corrigan"

The Journalist of the Year award went to RTE'sPrimetime Investigates while the national broadcaster's Washington correspondent, Carole Coleman, won the Political / Current Affairs award.

The Young Journalist of the Year was Mr Michael Brennan of the Irish Examiner, while Mr Conor Keane of the same publication was named as Business News Journalist of the Year.

Mr Tadhg O'Donoghue, Chairman of ESB, said: "The ESB media awards are about the achievements of those in the media who entertain, inform and on occasions enrage us."

This year also marks the end of the ESB's long history of sponsorship of the awards.

Presenting the awards in Dublin, the Minister for Communications, Mr Dempsey, noted the importance of rewarding excellence in journalism and said he hoped another sponsor could be found for next year.
