Mr Conor O'Clery, The Irish Times's North America Editor, has been named as Journalist of the Year for 2002 at the ESB National Media Awards. Mr O'Clery earned the award for his "outstanding coverage of the events of September 11th." He also won the award for News Reporter of the Year.

journalist, Mr John McManus, was named as Columnist of the Year at the ceremony in Dublin this morning.

The Young Journalist of the Year was Mr Carl O'Brien of the Irish Examiner, while Mr Bill Tyson of the Irish Independentwas named as Business Journalist of the Year.

Chairman of the Awards Mr Brian Farrell said Mr O'Clery earned the award for "the depth of experience, exceptional skill, sure sensitive style, controlled passion and - above all - palpable humanity brought to a catastrophe which became the news story of the year".
