An Irishman has been charged with murder for allegedly throwing another man overboard during a San Francisco Bay party cruise.

Police said Mr William Monaghan (27) denied the allegations against him.

Mr Lionel Voilat, a 30-year-old from Switzerland, was thrown over the boat's railing on Saturday night, prosecutor Mr James Hammer said.

Mr Monaghan has not entered a plea and is being held in San Francisco on $5 million bail.
