An Irishman remains in a critical condition on the Greek island of Crete after the scooter on which he was travelling ran off a steep cliff road and dived into the sea.
The man is believed to have been rescued from the sea and dragged to safety by a passing woman.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it was aware of the incident and the serious nature of the man's injuries. It has not yet released his name.
The man, believed to be in his early 20s and from Limerick, is in intensive care at a hospital in the island's capital city, Iraklion. His family have flown out to Crete to be with him.
The Greek island is a popular resort for young Irish and British holiday-makers.
Scooters are a major mode of transport for locals, but tour operators usually warn visitors against hiring them because of the dangers of driving on the poorly maintained roads.
