A 42-year-old Irish man was killed and an Irish woman was seriously injured in a freak car accident on a highway near the south coast town of Knysna, South African police said today.

A police spokesman the two were travelling in a hired car to Port Elizabeth yesterday when the trailer of a truck coming from the opposite direction broke free and crashed into the car.

The truck driver was not injured.

The woman was taken to the Lamprecht clinic in nearby George.

Police said the man's family had been informed of his death through the Irish embassy.
