An Irishman is still being detained in Panama in connection with the murder of a businessman from Blessington, Co Wicklow, on July 31st.
Mr Maxim Conroy (32), a manager at the Panama branch of Cable and Wireless, the multinational communications company, was stabbed to death outside his home in Panama City.
The Department of Foreign Affairs yesterday said an Irishman, believed to be a close friend of Mr Conroy, was being detained in connection with the murder. Under Panama's Spanish justice system he can be held for an unspecified time without charge.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was liaising closely with the Irishman's family since his arrest. Ireland does not have an embassy in Panama. The British embassy is monitoring the situation.
Mr Conroy will be buried in Co Wicklow today. His father, Mr Frank Conroy, said the family was heartbroken by what had happened.
