The three Irishmen charged with training the Marxist rebels of FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) in bomb-making techniques have been moved to a prison in the Colombian capital from the high-security jail at Combita, 90 miles outside the city.

Mr James Monaghan (56), Mr Martin McCauley (40) and Mr Niall Connolly (36) have been moved back to Bogota's La Modelo prison, where they were held before being transferred to Combita.

They were visited at the weekend at La Modelo by a group of observers and supporters from Ireland, Australia and the US, who had urged that the men should be returned to La Modelo because, despite drawbacks, it was considered less dangerous than Combita.

The observers and supporters met the Vice-President of Colombia, Mr Francisco Calderon Santos, last Friday to discuss the conduct of the trial. Allegedly prejudicial statements by prominent Colombian public figures were raised, as were concerns about the prisoners' safety, trial procedures and the sustained harassment of the observer group by right-wing protesters outside the courthouse.
