The Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC) has written to the management of Today FM, formerly Radio Ireland, saying it is not satisfied with the bulk of its day-time programmes. The letter followed the monthly meeting of the IRTC this week at which the commission considered a report from the IRTC's executive.

The executive has been monitoring in detail the output of the station, which was relaunched with a new name over two weeks ago.

An upbeat statement from the IRTC yesterday praised the extensive marketing and promotional campaign which the station has engaged in since the start of the year, adding the IRTC was now confident this would lead to an improvement in Today FM's listenership figures.

It said it was "pleased" with the key current affairs programmes The Way It Is and The Last Word, as well as the specialist music programmes The Eclectic Ballroom and Here Comes The Night. However, it is not satisfied Daybreak has fulfilled the commitments entered into by Today FM and approved by the IRTC in terms of news and current affairs and other elements of the programme.
