A senior Palestinian militant was taken into Israeli custody in Jenin this morning, after a day-long siege during which the Israelis shot and killed a local civilian.
Abu Rob, a senior commander of Islamic Jihad in the northern West Bank, was taken away by soldiers along with one of his aides after the house in which he was hiding was demolished around him.
Israeli troops announced a curfew in the town after more than 70 army jeeps and 25 armoured personnel carriers raided the Palestinian town.
Several personnel carriers surrounded the building where Abu Rob was believed to be hiding, and snipers took up positions on nearby roofs.
Troops shot and killed a local man who hurled rocks at an army patrol, witnesses said.
Palestinian fighters engaged in gunfights with the Israelis at several points in the city, and 11 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were injured, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.
