Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian gunman who opened fire on them in the West Bank city of Nablus today, Israeli military sources claimed.
The sources said the gunman, who was armed with a pistol, was a suspected member of a militant group linked to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement and was on Israel's wanted list.
Palestinian security sources identified the gunman as Fadi Abu Zant (19) of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and said he died at the scene after being shot by soldiers who raided the old city area of Nablus early this morning.
An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded by gunfire in Nablus, but it was unclear whether it happened in the same incident.
