A motion deploring the recent imprisonment in Spain of the national leadership of the Basque party, Herri Batasuna, and supporting "the ongoing struggle for Basque independence" was passed.

Mr Daithi Doolan said Herri Barasuna was an "open, legal and democratic party" which had substantial support among Basque people. Some 25 members of its executive had been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Other foreign policy motions passed included expressions of support for the Chiapas people of Mexico "in their struggle to end the oppression of indigenous peoples by the Mexican government" and the Kurdish nation "in its struggle to achieve self-determination".
