Tokyo has protested over the Chinese government's failure to protect Japan's diplomatic and commercial facilities from damage by protesters taking part in anti-Japanese demonstrations.
"We strongly protest to the Chinese government that violent protesters threw stones, plastic bottles and excrement at the Shanghai consulate," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Even though information was available in advance, the damage was not prevented, the statement said.
"We strongly urge the Chinese government to properly protect foreigners, including Japanese citizens, in China as well as normal business activities and diplomatic facilities," the statement said.
"We also urge that the current situation be dealt with severely and that serious efforts be made to prevent any recurrence."
