Tokyo - The Japanese government has pledged to continue its drive to make the national flag and anthem official next month. The Hinomaru flag, a red disc in the centre of a white field, has been used since the early 1600s, but became widely identified with Japan's second World War militarism and expansion into Asia.

The flag and the anthem have no legal or constitutional status as national symbols.
