Saxophonist Tim Berne (right) is a leading figure on New York's downtown music scene, one of those players who always seem to be at the cutting edge of whatever's going on; over the last quarter-century he has performed with Julius Hemphill, Paul Motian and Bill Frisell and his questing personality has frequently defied genre categorisation. He's here tomorrow with his own trio, Big Satan, completed by the marvellous drummer, Tom Rainey, and by the autodidact guitarist, Marc Ducret, who, like the leader, defies categorisation. In what could be one of the more surprising concerts of the year, they can be heard at Whelans, Dublin.
