The former head of Government Information Services and deputy government press secretary, Mr John Foley, has been appointed public relations manager at An Post. He is from Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, and began in journalism at the Enniscorthy Echo before moving to the Connacht Tribune in Galway and the Wexford Free Press.

In 1971 he joined the Irish Independent, where he was consumer affairs editor, before joining the newspaper's political staff at Leinster House. On the formation of the Fianna Fail-Labour government in 1993 he was appointed to Government Information Services, remaining there until the Fianna Fail/Progressive Democrat Government took office this year.

Last July he rejoined Independent Newspapers and covered industrial relations.
