A Scottish national has been jailed for 12 years by Judge Michael White at Dublin Circuit Crimnal Court for the possession of heroin worth €1.2 million in the city centre last year.

John Lynn (22) was sentenced directly after a jury returned unanimous verdicts on two charges of possession of the heroin last year on April 2nd last year with intent to supply it. The heroin was found in a Rover car spare wheel which had been placed in another car at Heuston Station.

The jury heard evidence of a massive Garda surveillance operation which began when the Rover car arrived at Dublin Ferryport and which culminated with the arrest of six people some hours later in the Heuston Station area. Secret videos taken by the gardai were shown to the jury.

Lynn, with an address at Muirside Avenue, Mount Vernon, Glasgow had pleaded not guilty and told the court after his sentencing that he was "innocent all along". It was day seven of the trial and the jury deliberated for three and a half hours.

Last June, a co-accused, Thomas Mulvey (66), of Ennismore Road, Liverpool was also jailed for 12 years by Judge Patrick McCartan for his role in the crime.

Mulvey had spent 37 years of his life in prison for various crimes and the jury was told in Lynn's trial that he was the main organiser in this drugs operation.

Judge White said it gave him no pleasure to give a lengthy sentence to a young man but that the destruction caused by drugs was evident in the courts every day.

He said Lynn had got involved in the transaction for material gain and he saw no reason why he should receive a lesser sentence than Mulvey.
