A judge has revoked bail for two Afghan asylum seekers after he spotted that they had signed different names on court documents to those which they had given gardaí.

Judge David Anderson in Dublin District Court yesterday said he was not happy to allow the two men continuing freedom although they had turned up in court in answer to the bail bonds which they had entered after their arrest.

Amal Shahan (25), Kilmacud House refugee reception centre, Stillorgan, Dublin, was charged with possession of a false Spanish passport at Thomas Street social welfare office on May 11th last.

Osamah Zaidi (32) was arrested on a follow-up search at a house in the South Circular Road the following month and charged with not having any identity papers.

The court heard they both spent some time in custody before they were eventually released on bail.

Mr Shahan pleaded guilty yesterday but just before the judge was about to impose sentence, he noticed the name on the bail bond he had signed on June 7th was different from the one on the charge sheet.

Mr Shahan's lawyer said the name given to gardaí was the English version of his name. There had also been some language difficulties on the day he was arrested.

Judge Anderson also noticed that Mr Zaidi signed the name "Wahid" on his bail bond.

His lawyer said this was his father's name, but he had given the correct name in the Garda station.

Gardaí had had no difficulty with giving them bail and they had turned up in court to answer the charges, counsel added.

Judge Anderson said he was not satisfied as to the identities of the people with whom he was dealing.

The cases were adjourned to the afternoon to allow them to produce other identification.

Cards were handed in to court and Judge Anderson said gardaí would need time to investigate them.

He remanded both men in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.
