Judge remands man charged with assault on bus driver

A MAN charged in connection with a bus hijacking in Dublin over the weekend has appeared before Dublin District Court.

A MAN charged in connection with a bus hijacking in Dublin over the weekend has appeared before Dublin District Court.

Mark Dwyer (32), Dolphin House, Dolphin’s Barn, Dublin, has been charged with assault causing harm and the unauthorised taking of a vehicle. He was refused bail following an appearance before Judge Frank O’Donnell yesterday, where he was remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison, to appear before the court on Friday.

He was arrested on Saturday night and detained by gardaí at Kevin Street Garda station, after he allegedly hijacked a bus in the Liberties between 9.30pm and 10pm on Saturday night.

Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution was given in court by Garda Kevin Molyneux.

A dispute arose aboard the bus, after the bus driver, a Chinese national who had been working for Dublin Bus for 18 months, was asked to open the doors in between stops on Cork Street.

When he refused, a male passenger became abusive, the court heard.
