Paris - A French judge yesterday said that Alois Brunner, the last major Nazi war criminal still thought to be at large, must stand trial in France for crimes against humanity. If the trial goes ahead it will be the third time Brunner, believed to be hiding in Syria, has been tried in absentia in France. He was sentenced to death in his absence in 1953 and 1954. e Stephan said Brunner is suspected of having organised a round-up in 1944 of 340 French Jewish orphans for extermination in death camps.
