June rainfall already more than double the average

June has been mostly a washout according to statistics published this week by Met Éireann

June has been mostly a washout according to statistics published this week by Met Éireann. Weather stations at Kilkenny and Roches Point have experienced more than 200 per cent the average rainfall for the month in just three weeks, writes Steven Carroll.

In spite of hot and sunny weather earlier in the month, only three of the 13 weather stations in the country - Malin Head, Belmullet and Clones - reported rainfall figures of less than the average monthly total.

Almost 47mm of rain was recorded at Valentia Observatory on June 2nd. This fall in a single day represented more than half of the expected 80mm rainfall for the entire month.

Temperature levels across the country have also fluctuated so far this month.

In Belmullet, it has been the warmest June on record, with an average temperature of 15.2 degrees. However, Rosslare weather station has recorded that this month is the coldest June in five years, with a mean temperature of 13.1 degrees.

The Dublin airport weather station reported that this has been the dullest June in 20 years. Up until Thursday, there had only been 110 hours of sunshine all month. This recent spell of bad weather looks set to continue into the weekend, with Met Éireann saying that there is "nothing promising on the horizon".

The news came as widespread downpours caused severe flooding and traffic delays in Dublin yesterday. Prolonged, heavy and thundery showers broke out regularly and Met Éireann has warned that there is a risk of similar weather and local flooding on Sunday.

Rathfarnham was one of the areas worst hit, where the Owendoher river burst its banks and there was flooding along the Whitechurch Road and the Turning Fork. Some side roads were closed and Taylor's Lane was impassable. A spokesman for Met Éireann said stations at Dublin airport and Casement Aerodrome recorded nine millimetres of rainfall between 3pm and 4pm.
