A small left of centre party holding the balance of power in Poland's parliament has repeated it
would back Prime Minister Marek Belka in a confidence vote only if early general elections were held later this year.

"If there is no stable political support (for Belka) we need to set the date for parliament to end its term. August is not a good month and the next date after the holiday season would be sometime in autumn," said Marek Borowski, leader of the Social Democracy of Poland (SdPL).

His made the remarks after meeting President Aleksander Kwasniewski, who sought to convince the party to back Mr Belka in the confidence vote, likely to take place in early June.

Mr Belka's ruling Democratic Left Alliance lacks a majority in parliament.
