The Connacht Ulster Fianna Fail MEP, Mr Mark Killilea, acquired some formidable lobbying skills in a varied political career as a Minister of State, TD, senator and county councillor, before opting for Europe.
And he used them to excellent effect at the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week when he was elected quaestor, a prestigious position which involves managing the parliaments affairs and representing members' interests. He will be provided with a staff and a large office.
Mr Killilea was initially given little chance of getting the job, but his confidence grew as the campaign progressed.
"My election sends out a strong message to the leadership of the parliament's largest political groups. The days of behind the scenes, sweetheart deals are over, said Mr Killilea.
The Taoiseach, Mr Bruton who visited the parliament yesterday, was among those to congratulate him. There was cross party support for Mr Killilea from among the Irish MEPs.
"I am absolutely thrilled," said the Dublin Fine Gael MEP, Ms Mary Banotti. "I canvassed actively for him. It shows what small delegations, representing small states can do."
