Labour said today the party would publish a draft Bill that would require all governments by law toallocate 0.7 per cent of GNP for overseas development aid.
Under the terms of the Bill, the target would have to be met within two years of the enactment of the legislation.
Since 2000, Ireland has been committed to increasing its aid to 0.7 per cent of GNP by the year 2007. However, intermediate targets have already been missed.
Labour leader Pat Rabbitte, spokesman on foreign affairs Michael D Higgins and spokeswoman on finance Joan Burton will unveil the bill at a press conference tomorrow.
