Work on the £67 million Lee tunnel was halted for a second day yesterday as the dispute continued between 200 construction workers and the contractors, Tarmac-Walls, about overtime and special bonus payments. A hearing of the Labour Court has been set for the end of the month.
A spokesperson for SIPTU, representing most of the workers, said they would return to work provided the company allowed them work the normal construction week of 39 hours. A spokesman for Tarmac-Walls said, however, they needed the workers to be available for overtime to allow the work to proceed as planned. "The project becomes unmanageable if we are limited to a 39-hour week," he said.
