Legendary jockey and trainer Bill Shoemaker (72) died yesterday at his home in San Marino, California.
Shoemaker, who rode his first winner at 18, recorded 8,833 victories in a 41-year riding career.
He won the Kentucky Derby four times, becoming the oldest jockey to capture the race in 1986 aboard Ferdinand at the age of 54.
Shoemaker was left paralysed from the neck down following a car accident in 1991. He trained horses from his wheelchair until retiring in 1997.
